What is Iyasaka 弥栄?

What is Iyasaka 弥栄?

Iyasaka (弥栄) is a beautiful Japanese word that means "to prosper ever more" or "to flourish increasingly." It does not simply refer to a current state of prosperity, but carries a positive and powerful nuance, expressing a wish for continued growth and vibrant prosperity into the future.

It can be described as an auspicious prayer, or norito 祝詞, deeply rooted in Japanese culture that expresses gratitude for everything from the past to the present, while praying for limitless development and prosperity from the present into the future.

Etymology and History

The word "Iyasaka 弥栄" is composed of two kanji characters:

  • Iya (弥): Expresses the idea of something progressing further, meaning "more and more" or "increasingly."

  • Saka (栄): Means "to prosper" or "to flourish" (sakaeru 栄える).

Together, they form the word "Iyasaka 弥栄," filled with hope for the future. It has long been used as a significant word in Shinto ceremonies and rituals, serving as a prayer for the power of the gods (kami 神) to grow ever greater, and for the nation and its people to prosper under their divine protection.
