Daruma 達磨: The Japanese Doll of Perseverance and Good Fortune

The "Daruma 達磨" is a round, limbless doll that has long been cherished in Japan as a good luck charm, particularly as a symbol of "indomitable spirit" and "goal achievement". Its form embodies the spirit of nana korobi ya oki —"fall down seven times, get up eight"—as it rights itself no matter how many times it is tipped over. This unique doll gives us the courage to face adversity and the unwavering resolve needed to make our wishes come true.

A Daruma 達磨 is more than a mere decoration; it is a steadfast companion that watches over its owner's journey, walking alongside them on the path to fulfilling their most cherished goals.

History and Origin

The Daruma 達磨 doll is modeled after Bodhidharma (Bodai-daruma), a real Buddhist monk from India who lived during the 5th and 6th centuries. He is renowned as the patriarch who traveled to China and transmitted the teachings of Zen Buddhism.

According to legend, Bodhidharma meditated facing a wall for nine years, and as a result of this severe ascetic training, his arms and legs atrophied. This dramatic legend became the origin of the Daruma's round, limbless form. During the Edo period, this figure was combined with a traditional self-righting toy called an okiagari-koboshi ("little getting-up monk"), and it spread throughout Japan as a popular good luck charm to protect people from illness and disaster.

The Wishes and Symbolism of the Daruma 達磨

The distinctive appearance of the Daruma 達磨 is imbued with various wishes for good fortune.

  • The Red Papier-Mâché: The most traditional color for a Daruma 達磨 is red, which has long been believed to possess the power to ward off evil and repel illness. This is also said to have originated from the red robes that Bodhidharma wore.

  • Auspicious Facial Features: It is said that the Daruma's face artfully depicts two symbols of longevity: the crane in the form of the eyebrows and the tortoise in the shape of the beard, showing how wishes for happiness are embedded in every detail.

  • The Meaning of Various Colors: In modern times, Daruma dolls are crafted in a wide array of colors, each corresponding to a specific type of wish.

    • Red: For household safety and general good fortune.

    • White: For goal achievement and passing examinations.

    • Gold: For increased financial luck and business prosperity.

    • Black: For warding off evil and ensuring business stability.

    • Blue: For academic improvement and the blossoming of talents.

    • Green: For health, longevity, and physical wellness.

A Traditional Guide to Fulfilling Your Wishes with a Daruma 達磨

Here is the traditional method for drawing out the full power of a Daruma 達磨 to achieve your goals.

  1. Set Your Goal and Awaken the Spirit (Painting the First Eye) When you first receive a new Daruma 達磨, decide on a single, specific goal or wish you want to achieve. Then, while focusing on that wish, use black ink to paint the pupil in the Daruma's left eye (the eye on your right as you face it). This act is called kaigen ("eye-opening") and is a sacred ritual to breathe a soul into the doll and establish your vow to reach your goal.

  2. Displaying Your Daruma 達磨 The one-eyed Daruma should be placed in a clean, respected place in your home that is higher than your eye level, such as on a household altar or a high shelf in the living room. By seeing it every day, you will be constantly reminded of your objective and remain focused on your path.

  3. When Your Wish is Granted (Painting the Second Eye) Once you have successfully achieved your goal, you can, with a heart full of gratitude, paint the pupil in the Daruma's remaining right eye. A Daruma 達磨 with both eyes open is a testament to your hard work and accomplishment.

  4. With Gratitude, Move to the Next Stage After one year has passed or when your wish is fulfilled and both eyes have been painted, the proper custom is to return the Daruma 達磨 to the heavens with gratitude. This is often done by taking it to a "Daruma Kuyō," a memorial service held at a local shrine or temple where it is ritually burned. Then, by welcoming a new Daruma 達磨 with a new goal, you can progress to the next stage of your life's journey.

A Daruma 達磨 is a mirror of the determination that lies within your own heart. Its powerful gaze is always there, quietly and steadfastly watching over you as you advance toward your goals.
